Doc clarity/detail for extra spacing properties
Re: Space spacing being in addition to character spacing see:

 * <d7b85fbaa1/scene/resources/dynamic_font.cpp (L858-L859)>

Re: Value being able to be negative see example here:

 * <https://github.com/godotengine/godot/issues/38630>

But also note that nodes other than `Label` may not currently render extra space spacing correctly.

doc: Improve distance_fade documentation
Changed the documentation of distance_fade_max_distance and min
to be consistent with the behavior of the code as well as the user
documentation. Also noted the behavior of swapping max_distance and
min_distance (where max_distance < min_distance).

Fixes #36051.

667c970b77 Optimize octree and fix octree leak
Prevents adding new octants until a limiting number of elements have been added to the current octant. This enables balancing the benefits of brute force against the benefits of spatial partitioning. The limit can be set per octree.

Project settings are added for rendering octree to set the best balance per project depending on number of tests per frame / tick, and the amount of editing of the octree.

Fixes octants being leaked when removing elements.

Optimize octree with cached linear lists

Storing elements in octants using linked lists is efficient for housekeeping but very slow for testing. This optimization stores additional local_vectors with Element pointers and AABBs which are cached and only updated when a dirty flag is set on the octant.

This is selectable with 2 versions of Octree : Octree and Octree_CL, Octree being the old behaviour. At present the cached list version is only used for the visual server octree (rendering) as it has only been demonstrated to be faster there so far.

This uses slightly more memory (probably a few kb in most cases) but can be significantly faster during testing (culling etc).

It took me a bit to figure this out, as I was initially doing something
more complicated like this before I realized I just had to pass
get_mesh_arrays directly to add_surface_from_arrays.

```
var arr_mesh = ArrayMesh.new()
var arrays = []
arrays.resize(ArrayMesh.ARRAY_MAX)
arrays[ArrayMesh.ARRAY_VERTEX] = c.get_mesh_arrays()
arr_mesh.add_surface_from_arrays(Mesh.PRIMITIVE_TRIANGLES, arrays)
c0b394572f Fix Return key events in LineEdit & TextEdit on Android
Depending on the device implementation, editor actions could be
received with different action ids or not at all for multi-line.
Added a parameter to virtual keyboards to properly handle single-line
and multi-line cases in all situations.
Single-line:
Input type set to text without multiline to make sure actions are sent.
IME options are set to DONE action to force action id consistency.
Multi-line:
Input type set to text and multiline to make sure enter triggers new lines.
Actions are disabled by the multiline flag, so '\n' characters are
handled in text changed callbacks.
c2a4ce9380 Enable file logging by default on desktops to help with troubleshooting
- Use the `.log` file extension (recognized on Windows out of the box)
  to better hint that generated files are logs. Some editors provide
  dedicated syntax highlighting for those files.
- Use an underscore to separate the basename from the date and
  the date from the time in log filenames. This makes the filename
  easier to read.
- Keep only 5 log files by default to decrease disk usage in case
  messages are spammed.
8ac13e50cf Move Haiku platform port to external repository
The Haiku port now resides at:
https://github.com/godotengine/godot-haiku-platform
While we're happy to support as many Free and Open Source platforms as we can,
we need to put the main focus on the platforms that we can reasonably maintain,
and for Haiku we have been lacking maintainers ever since the port was first
merged in 2015.
The Haiku code has not been compiling and much less working at least since the
release of Godot 3.0, and while some attempts have been made at fixing things,
it's still not functional today in the `3.2` branch (and much less in `master`,
understandably).
Having it in an external repository should hopefully enable Haiku contributors
to fix issues in their own time, and possibly tag versions compatible with
past Godot releases once they are ready.
1b58f94296 Fix Image.create_from_data use_mipmaps doc
The Image.create_from_data doc describes the "use_mipmaps" argument as a
way to generate mipmaps, but this method only allocates and loads data.
This can cause confusion, where this function reads more or less data
than expected. Update the doc to be more specific that create_from_data
7bf9787921 SCons: Format buildsystem files with psf/black
Configured for a max line length of 120 characters.
psf/black is very opinionated and purposely doesn't leave much room for
configuration. The output is mostly OK so that should be fine for us,
but some things worth noting:
- Manually wrapped strings will be reflowed, so by using a line length
  of 120 for the sake of preserving readability for our long command
  calls, it also means that some manually wrapped strings are back on
  the same line and should be manually merged again.
- Code generators using string concatenation extensively look awful,
  since black puts each operand on a single line. We need to refactor
  these generators to use more pythonic string formatting, for which
  many options are available (`%`, `format` or f-strings).
- CI checks and a pre-commit hook will be added to ensure that future
  buildsystem changes are well-formatted.
275183ef15 GLES2 batching - Add UV precision adjustment for tilemaps
Scaling tilemaps can cause border artifacts around the edges of tiles. This has been traced to precision issues in the GPU. This PR adds an adjustment to allow a minor contraction of the UVs of rects in order to compensate for the incorrect classification of texels across the UV border.
`get_char_size()` is a public virtual function defined in the `Font`
However, it was only exposed to the GDScript API through the Bitmap
This commit exposes the function through `Font` instead.
451c3fc0fb GLES2 2D batching - item reordering, light joining and light modulate fix
Although 2D draws in painters order with strict ordering, in certain circumstances items can be reordered to increase batching / decrease state changes, without affecting the end result. This can be determined by an overlap test.
In situation with item:
A-B-A
providing the third item does not overlap the second, they can be reordered:
A-A-B
Items already contain an AABB which can be used for this overlap test.
1)
To utilise this, I have implemented item reordering (only for single rects for now), with the lookahead adjustable in project settings. This can increase performance in situations where items may not be grouped in the scene tree by texture. It can also be switched off (by setting lookahead to 0).
2)
This same trick can be used to help join items that are lit. Lit items previously would prevent joining completely, thus missing out on performance gains other than multi-command items such as tilemaps.
In this PR, lights are assigned as bits in a bitfield (up to 64, the optimization is disabled above this), and on each try_item (for joining), the bitfield for lights and shadows is constructed and compared with the previous items. If these match the 2 items can potentially be joined. However, this can only be done without changing the rendered result if an overlap test is successful.
This overlap test can be adjusted to join items up to a specific number of item references, selectable in project settings, or turned off.
3)
The legacy uniform single rect drawing routine seems to have been identified as the source of flicker, particularly on nvidia. However, it can also be up to 2x as fast. Because of the speed the batching contains a fallback where it can use the legacy single rect method, but I have now added a project setting to make this switchable. In most cases with batching it should not be necessary (as single rects are drawn less frequently) and thus the flickering can be totally avoided.
4)
This PR also fixes a color modulate bug when drawing light passes, in certain situations (particularly custom _draw routines with multiple rects).
5)
This PR also fixes #38291, a bug in the legacy renderer where light passes could draw rects in wrong position.
45b0b8bff8 GLES2 2d Batch rendering (across items)
2d rendering is currently bottlenecked by drawing primitives one at a time, limiting OpenGL efficiency. This PR batches primitives and renders in fewer drawcalls, resulting in significant performance improvements. This also speeds up text rendering.
This PR batches across canvas items as well as within items.
The code dynamically chooses between a vertex format with and without color, depending on the input data for a frame, in order to optimize throughput and maximize batch size. It also adds an option to use glScissor to reduce fillrate in light passes.
6e24933115 Improve dictionary description
I improved dictionary description to ad some real life examples and expand on it a little bit so person who never seen dictionary can understand it better seeing them for a first time here.
I also added note about the way to compare dictionaries  as it can catch people of guard because common assumption is that it works the same as comparing Arrays when it does not.
It mostly fixes issues I have listed in https://github.com/godotengine/godot-docs/issues/3065 where GraphNode description was rather lacking clarity. It was near impossible how to use the them or how to create new slots etc.
I improved it quite a bit if anyone has idea how to reword original "A tuple of input and output slots is defined for each GUI element included in the GraphNode." I would love to hear it. I am unsure how to word it in more understandable way.
907adb37ce Fixes get_floor_normal() returning the user defined floor_normal.
When there is no collision with a floor the get_floor_normal() function
should return the zero vector to be consistent with get_floor_velocity().
Renames floor_normal to up_direction in all bindings.
Updates the documentation of get_floor_normal() and get_floor_velocity()
to make it clear when the values are valid. Updates the documentation for
move_and_slide() and move_and_slide_with_snap() to use the new up_direction
parameter name.
It's a new feature in 3.2, so does not break compat with 3.1.x.
A z_depth of 0 returns the camera position, which is not really useful.
This also makes the API breakage from 3.1 clearer as 3.1 code will now
fail to compile, so users will have to adapt and use the new parameter.
For the reference, in 3.1, the z_depth was hardcoded to the near plane.
Node::_get_configuration_warning was already exposed to generate custom warnings, but it wasn't fully usable without being able to notify the scene tree when the warning needs to appear or change.
5629a006d9 #14011: Implement TreeItem.get_button_tooltip(column, idx).
When added to `TreeItem`, buttons are given tooltips. When returned via `get_button(...)`, however, the button is a `Texture` and the tooltip information isn't included.
For accessibility purposes, it is useful to have access to the tooltip text. As such, we can retrieve a button's tooltip to use as a button label.
Clarify get_node vs get_node_or_null.
Fixes #2771. It is confusing to say get_node will "raise an error" if
the node does not exist, as this phrase is used elsewhere in the godot
docs (e.g. at several points in the GDScript overview) to indicate
something that will completely stop execution. Saying it logs an error
is more accurate.
97959a53df Add an overridable VCS Interface for the editor
The VCS interface can be thought of like a proxy system, where any call
to the API is redirected to the actual implementation of the VCS API
which may be existing in the form of a GDNative plugin which is marked
as a singleton and is not marked reloadable. If the implementation
doesn't exist in the file system, it only returns the default responses which contain
mostly empty containers of the data type that every API call returns.
EditorVCSInterface is used like a Godot object with a script attached to it. The script
is the implementation of the API and the object is the interface to the
script, which returns default responses if the script doesn't exist or
if the script doesn't define a function that handles that particular API call.
The entire system has been implemented using Object::call() and its
ability to switch to the script instance to handle the API call if the
script exists. Look for VersionControlEditorPlugin::_initialize() for
the essential API setup.
aa3ef8893b Removed clamping of the Linear tonemapping when KEEP_3D_LINEAR
Changed the behaviour of the Linear tonemapping operator to not clamp to [0, 1] range
in the case when KEEP_3D_LINEAR is defined. This allows to render values > 1.0 in
floating point texture targets (via Viewport) for further processing or saving high
dynamic range data into files. This only works when no color conversion is active.
Tweak the default fog depth end to use a fixed value
The previous value (0) was a special case in the fog shader.
It made the shader use the Camera's `far` value as the fog depth end
value, which led to an inconsistency in the fog rendering between
the editor and a running project. This is because the editor camera
uses a `far` property of 500 by default, whereas the Camera node's
`far` property is set to 100 by default.
The new fixed value is equal to the default `far` property in Camera,
which leads to a consistent appearance between the editor and a running
project.
This reproduces the behavior used for printing when using the remote
which makes it possible to display much more GDScript warnings
before overflowing.
This also adds a "Too many warnings" message, so that warnings
don't look like errors when overflowing anymore.
bf6c301b9c Add access to interpolation fraction for fixed timestep interpolation
Addresses #30068
This is a prerequisite for allowing proper support for fixed timestep interpolation, exposing the interpolation fraction to the engine, modules and gdscript.
The interpolation fraction is the fraction through the current physics tick at the time of the current frame.
542489a866 DocData: Re-expose parametric setters and getters
Setters and getters have been hidden from the documentation when the matching
properties have been exposed, but some of them are parametric and require the
name or index of a given parameter to be used. So they need to be properly
documented with the type and name of the arguments they take.
For example, CPUParticles' `set_param(Parameter param, float value)`.
14e2a99129 Tilemap fix displaced textures and shapes and added center texture and compatibility mode
This commit fix #22989 #15249 #28206. Main problem is that tilemap displace textures in different tile origins in a strange way and doesn´t respect coincidence between texture and shapes in not uniform tiles. This issue is present in godot 3.0 and godot 3.1. To maintain compatibility are added a compatibility mode and a center texture option. Other related issues and pull request: #28896 #29487 #29519 #29961. Idications of #30204 are added
d6176db271 Unexpose subclasses of ResourceFormatLoader and -Saver
ResourceFormatLoader and ResourceFormatSaver are meant to be overridden
to add support for different formats in ResourceLoader and ResourceSaver.
Those should be exposed as they can be overridden in plugins.
On the other hand, all predefined subclasses of those two base classes
are only meant to register support for new file and resource types, but
should not and cannot be used directly from script, so they should not
be exposed.
Also unexposed ResourceImporterOGGVorbis (and thus its base class
ResourceImporter) which are editor-only.
02ea99129e Adding a new Camera Server implementation to Godot.
This is a new singleton where camera sources such as webcams or cameras on a mobile phone can register themselves with the Server.
Other parts of Godot can interact with this to obtain images from the camera as textures.
This work includes additions to the Visual Server to use this functionality to present the camera image in the background. This is specifically targetted at AR applications.
Update VehicleWheel.xml
It seems (please correct me if you understand it otherwise) that the description for the `get_skidinfo()` function is the inverse of what actually happens. I have run some simple tests, and it looks like setting low `Friction Slip` (e.g. try `1` or `2`) causes more skidding and returns smaller values for `get_skidinfo()`, while when the `Friction Slip` is increased, the car skids less and values printed to the console increase (get closer to `1.0`). So it seems that a value of `0.0` means skidding, while a value of `1.0` means no skidding (the description says the exact opposite to this, from what I understood).
its links should point to the "latest" docs branch, to ensure that users of
Those links could be switched to stable branch subdomains before branching
off for a new major or minor release, to start tracking the frozen stable
docs branches.
883ef8570a Expose 2D polygon boolean operations in Geometry singleton
Clipper 6.4.2 is used internally to perform polypaths clipping, as well
as inflating/deflating polypaths. The following methods were added:
```
Geometry.merge_polygons_2d(poly_a, poly_b) # union
Geometry.clip_polygons_2d(poly_a, poly_b) # difference
Geometry.intersect_polygons_2d(poly_a, poly_b) # intersection
Geometry.exclude_polygons_2d(poly_a, poly_b) # xor

Geometry.clip_polyline_with_polygon_2d(poly_a, poly_b)
Geometry.intersect_polyline_with_polygon_2d(poly_a, poly_b)

Geometry.offset_polygon_2d(polygon, delta) # inflate/deflate
Geometry.offset_polyline_2d(polyline, delta) # returns polygons

// This one helps to implement CSG-like behaviour:
Geometry.transform_points_2d(points, transform)
```
All the methods return an array of polygons/polylines. The resulting
polygons could possibly be holes which could be checked with
`Geometry.is_polygon_clockwise()` which was exposed to scripting as well.
Clarify auto_advance.
Make the docs more clear about how you can use auto_advance. Calling it
a "variable" is vague, so I updated the docs to clearly state that it
becomes a boolean parameter on the AnimationTree.
Fill out some of the AnimationNode docs.
The API docs for various animation nodes are pretty empty, yet the
tutorial at
https://docs.godotengine.org/en/latest/tutorials/animation/animation_tree.html
contains some details.
These details should be included in the API docs so looking up a
particular class actually provides some information rather than
requiring the user to hunt for a different tutorial.
This also links the AnimationTree tutorial and demo in the docs.
I've found the TPS demo to be the best resource so far for learning
how to use the AnimationTree. This should be easy to find if someone
looks up the AnimationTree API docs.
Finally, this fixes a param typo in AnimationNodeStateMachine.
